SEBHAT Ephrem Min. of Defense |
Sebhat Ephrem (Tigrinya: ሰብሓት ኤፍረም; born 1951 in Abardae, Eritrea) is the Minister of Energy and Mines for Eritrea, a former Minister of Defence and former Eritrean People's Liberation Front commander during the Eritrean War of Independence. Sebhat completed high school at the Evangelical Lutheran High School in Asmara, Eritrea. He later attended Addis Ababa University for two years before joining the EPLF in 1972. As a fighter, he quickly rose up the ranks from a political commissar to becoming part of the executive committee. Sebhat Ephrem served from June 1992 to March 1994 as the Governor of Asmara. From March 1994 to May 1995 he served as the Minister of Health. In both positions he brought structure and reorganization to these offices. After leaving the military in June 1992, he returned to the army in May 1995 with the rank of general and was appointed and confirmed as Minister of Defense. SEMERE Russom Min. of Education |
Semere Russom (born July 27, 1943) began his professional life as a teacher. He traveled to the United States as a student at the University of Oklahoma, but terminated his studies in 1976 to serve in the Eritrean People's Liberation Front. After Eritrea's independence he served as Eritrean Ambassador to the United States and Canada. Afterwards he continued his career in public service as Director of European Affairs in the Eritrea Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2001. On 2002-01-01 he left the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to become the Mayor of Asmara and the Administrator of the Central Region of Eritrea. Berhane Abrehe (Tigrinya: በርሃነ አብረሀ) is an Eritrean top government official who, since 2001, has been serving as the country's Minister of Finance. In 1972, Berhane Abrehe graduated with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has held the post of Director of Macro-Ecnonomic policy in the office of the President of Eritrea, subsequently advancing to his Cabinet position and becoming the third Minister of Finance in the 14 years since Eritrea's proclamation of independence in May 1993. Osman Saleh Mohammed was the first Minister of Education for Eritrea following Independence, serving in that position from 1993 to 2007. He has overseen the transition from the revolutionary EPLF school system to a national education system. Ali Abdu Ahmed is a former Eritrean politician who left the regime and sought asylum abroad. From March 2009 until his defection in November 2012, Ahmed was the Minister of Information for Eritrea. His father, brother, and 15 year old daughter, an American citizen, were consequentially detained while trying to cross the border into Sudan and have been held indefinitely. The American government inquired regarding his daughter's well-being while the Eritrean government vehemently rejected her status as an American citizen and has refused to release information regarding her whereabouts or well being. Fozia Hashim is a former head of the Eritrean High Court. She is a Muslim woman and in 1993 was appointed to the post of Minister of Justice. Saleh Meki (1948 – October 2, 2009) was an Eritrean politician and government minister. He was a member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, which had offices in the San Francisco Bay Area of the United States, during the period of the Eritrean War of Independence. Meki was trained as a nurse anesthesiologist in the United States. He returned to Eritrea following the end of the country's war for independence against Ethiopia. Meki was appointed and confirmed as the first Minister of Marine Resources following Eritrea's independence. He later also served as the country's Minister of Health, before being reassigned as the Minister of Marine Resources once again in a cabinet reshuffle.
