What Now? after Brexit, after Trump and after the resignation, economic and financial policies to lift Bulgaria’s growth prospects

Financial Markets Group public lecture
Date: Monday 5 December 2016
Time: 6.00-8pm
Venue: OLD3.21, Old Building
Speaker: Eva Paunova, Member of the European Parliament
Chair: Simeon Djankov, Executive Director FMG

Economic growth in Eastern Europe has been lethargic after the Eurozone crisis, with growth rates at half pre-2009 levels. What can be done to reverse this negative trend? Three challenges need to be addressed: the adverse demographic trend, the lack of innovation and the slow transition to a green economy. Bulgaria will be used as a case study on designing a reform programme, capable of addressing these and other issues. The lecture will highlight the financial instruments that can be utilised to spur higher growth.

Eva Paunova is a Member of the European Parliament from Bulgaria. As part of the Economic & Monetary Affairs and Internal Market & Consumer Protection Committees, she is working on key dossiers such as the implementation of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) and the Digital Single Market Strategy. Paunova is Vice-President of SME Europe and European Movement International.

Simeon Djankov is executive director of the Financial Markets Group at LSE. Previously, he was deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Bulgaria from 2009 to 2013. In this capacity, he represented his country at the Ecofin meetings of finance ministers in Brussels. Prior to his cabinet appointment, Djankov was a chief economist of the finance and private sector vicepresidency of the World Bank.

The Financial Markets Group Research Centre (@LSE_FMG) was established in 1987 at the LSE. The FMG is a leading centre in Europe for policy research into financial markets. It is the focal point of the LSE's research communication with the business, policy making and international finance communities. The FMG works alongside the Department of Finance to understand problems in financial markets and in the decision-making processes of corporations, banks and regulators.

This event is free and open to all but pre-registration is required. Please email Liz Bunting at e.bunting@lse.ac.uk to register. For any queries email e.bunting@lse.ac.uk or call 020 7955 6206
